Passages Northwest
Passages Northwest was founded in 1997 with the belief in the power of working with girls and women through a combination of arts, science and outdoor activities. Our mission is simple and powerful: to inspire courage and leadership in girls through the integrated exploration of the arts and the natural environment. On Passages Northwest programs, girls learn by engaging in experiences that teach them about themselves, each other and the world around them. Through this type of engaged learning students develop responsibility, discover and nurture their true selves, and gain the skills to confidently articulate and pursue their individual goals and aspirations.
Courage is the operative word at Passages Northwest: courage to do, courage to create, courage to ask. Our goal is to help unearth the impressive physical, creative, and inquisitive courage they already possess. Physical courage is revealed while pushing that last mile on the trail, kayaking on tranquil waters, or while suspended on a rock wall, reaching for that last hold that seems just out of reach. Creative courage is discovered telling stories around the campfire, writing poetry and creating a nature-based art project. Inquisitive courage is woven in every moment on the adventure, while investigating trees, flowers, wildlife, and asking questions of why and how. Passages Northwest programs are about facing reasonable challenges, discovering talents and unleashing abilities.
Our programs and services include:
- Girls Rock! An after school rock climbing mentorship program for middle school girls
- Open enrollment Winter, Spring and Summer Break wilderness programs for pre-teen and teen girls (Rock Climbing, Backpacking, Sea kayaking, Hiking and Camping)
- Parent – Daughter programs (one day to weekend retreats)
- Alumnae leadership opportunities: Youth Advisory Board and internships within the organization and with community partners
- Workshops and trainings for girls, parents, and educators on topics such as relational aggression; power sharing; communication and girl development
- Custom courses designed specifically for schools; youth serving organizations, community groups, as well as for individuals from our community.
