Wiggins, Athinaikos Win EuroCup Final Four Opener
After depositing ZKK Medvescak, Dynamo and Dynamo Kyiv in the EuroCup Sixteenth, Quarterfinal and Semifinals of the EuroCup, Candice Wiggins and Greek outfit Athinaikos opened up the Final Four round yesterday, traveling to Russia to take on another Dynamo club, this time Dynamo Kursk in the first leg of the two-game, total-point series.
Picking up where she left off last week, Wiggins got going early, scoring 16 points to stake Athinaikos to a one-point half-time lead of 30-29. A Wiggins three-ball, one of four on the night, closed out an 8-0 Athinaikos run that stretched the lead to 38-29 midway through the third quarter. From then on, Wiggins kept Dynamo at bay, although the home club rallied within three points on three separate occasions. Athinaikos eventually took the opening leg, 64-58.
Wiggins paced the winning team with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. In 13 EuroCup games, the Lynx shapshooter is averaging 16.7 ppg on 47.9 percent shooting. WNBA player Michelle Snow scored 17 points for Kursk, while Jillian Robbins poured in 15 while corralling nine boards.
The two clubs will matchup again on Thursday, March 18 in the final game of the series. The winner will advance to the EuroCup Championship series where it will take on either Saarlouis Royals or Nadezhda.
